Rose, Black Sesame, and Egg Custard

Many people who overthink or have an underlying constitutional deficiency may experience yellowish, soft hair, hair loss, or premature greying. In such cases, appropriate dietary nourishment can be helpful.

For example, black sesame with egg and milk is a nourishing option. I sometimes like to make this dessert simply because I enjoy the striking contrast between the black and white colors.

The method is quite simple.

Take equal parts black sesame seeds and glutinous rice. Gently dry-roast them over low heat until fragrant, allowing the rice to turn slightly golden. Then place them into a soy milk maker (or blender) with an appropriate amount of water and blend into a smooth black sesame paste.

Pour the black sesame paste into a small steaming bowl and let it cool slightly. A thin layer of oil film will naturally form on the surface, which helps prevent the egg mixture from blending into the sesame paste when poured on top.

Separate one egg and discard the yolk. Add an appropriate amount of milk to the egg white, mix well, and gently pour it over the black sesame paste. If preparing it for women, you can add one or two rose buds to help regulate menstruation and promote the smooth flow of qi. However, rose has a very strong fragrance, so it should be used sparingly.

Cover the bowl and steam over water for about 25 minutes. When finished, you will see a beautiful contrast — white on top and black underneath. When eaten together, the rich nuttiness of black sesame blends with the aroma of glutinous rice and the creamy fragrance of milk, creating a wonderfully smooth and satisfying texture.
